Geniohyoid
A: pulls hyoid anterosuperiorly, shortens mouth floor, widens pharynx
I: C1 via hypoglossal nerve
Stylohyoid
A: elevates and retracts hyoid (elongates floor of mouth)
I: stylohyoid branch of CN VII
Digastric
A: works with infrahyoids to depress mandible against resistance, elevates and steadies hyoid during swallowing and speaking
I: anterior belly: CN V3 via nerve to mylohyoid
posterior belly: CN VII (preparotid branch)
Sternohyoid
A: depresses hyoid after elevation during swallowing
I: C1-C3 via ansa cervicalis
Omohyoid
A: depresses, retracts, steadies hyoid
I: C1-C3 via ansa cervicalis
Sternothyroid
A: depresses hyoid and larynx
I: C2-C3 via ansa cervicalis
Thyrohyoid
A: depresses hyoid and elevates larynx
I: C1 via hypoglossal nerve
Mylohyoid
A: elevates hyoid, floor of mouth and tongue during speaking and swallowing
I: V3 (nerve to mylohyoid)
