Semispinalis Capitis
(Muscle moving the head) Action: Extends and Rotates head
Splenius Capitis
(Muscle moving the head) Action: extends, rotates, and flexes laterally the head.
Sternocleidomastoid
(Muscle moving the head) Origin: Manubrium and clavicle. Insertion: Mastoid process and superior nuchal line of occipital bone. Action: Simultaneous contraction of both heads of muscle- flexion of head Individual contraction- rotates and flexes head to opposite side of contracting muscle.
Buccinator
(Muscle of facial expression) Action: Compresses (pulls inward) cheeks. (as in whistling and kissing).
Depressor labii inferioris
(muscle of facial expression) Action: Depresses lower lip (as in frowning or expression of doubt).
Levator labii superioris
(Muscle of facial expression) Action: Elevates upper lip (as in sneering).
Occipitofrontalis
(Muscle of facial expression) Action: Elevates eyebrows, wrinkles skin of forehead, draws scalp anteriorly (expressions of surprise or fright).
Orbicularis oculi
(muscle of facial expression) Action: Closes eye by depressing upper eyelid and elevating lower eyelid (blinking or squinting)
Orbicularis oris
(Muscle of facial expression) Action: compresses lip, protrudes and purses lip (as in kissing)
Platysma
(Muscle of facial expression) Action: depresses mandible, depresses lower lip back and down, tenses skin of neck
Zygomaticus
(Muscle of facial expression) Action: Retracts and elevates upper lip and corner of mouth (as in smiling)
Temporalis
(Muscle of Mastication) Origin: temporal lines on parietal and frontal bones. Insertion: Coronoid process of mandible. Action: Elevates and retracts mandible for biting and chewing
Masseter
(Muscle of Mastication) Origin: Zygomatic arch. Insertion: Lateral side of mandible. Action: Elevates and protracts mandible.
Digastric
(Hyoid muscle) Origin: Mastoid process (posterior belly), mandible near midline (anterior belly). Insertion: Hyoid.
Geniohyoid
(Hyoid muscle) Action: Protracts and elevates hyoid, depresses mandible.
Mylohyoid
(Hyoid muscle) Action: Elevates floor of mouth and hyoid during swallowing
Omohyoid
(Hyoid muscle) Action: Depresses hyoid, fixes hyoid for depression of mandible
Sternohyoid
(Hyoid muscle) Action: Depresses hyoid
Iliocostalis
(Muscle acting on the vertebral column) Action: Extends and flexes laterally vertebral column
Longissimus
(Muscle acting on the vertebral column) Action: Extends and flexes laterally vertebral column.
Spinalis
(Muscle acting on the vertebral column) Action: Extends vertebral column
Semispinalis
(Muscle acting on the vertebral column) Action: Extends neck and vertebral column
Interspinales
(Muscle acting on the vertebral column) Action: Extends back and neck
Multifidus
(Muscle acting on the vertebral column) Action: Extends and rotates vertebral column
Diaphragm
(Muscle of the thorax) Action: Depresses floor of thoracic cavity for inhalation.
External intercostals
(Muscle of the thorax) Action: Elevates ribs for inhalation
