muscles and stuff Flashcards
Iliopsoas
True Groin Muscle, Flexion of hip joint and flexion of the lumbar spine
Psoas Major
Orginates on all 5 lumbar vertebrae and intervertebral discs and the 12th thoracic, inserts on the lesser trochanter of femur, flexes hip joint, assists with adduction and external rotation of hip joint, assists with flexion and rotation of the lumbar spine
Iliacus
originates from the iliac fossa of pelvis to the tendon of the psoas major and inserts just distal to the lesser trochanter of the femur, flexes hip joint, assists with adduction and external rotation of the hip joint and flexion of the lumbar spine
Psosas minor
not present in 1 or 2 sides of 50% of population, origin is the 12th thoracic and 1st lumbar vertebrae and intervertebral disc and inserts on the pubic bone, not considered hip joint muscle, assists the psosas major with lumbar spine flexion
sartorius
longest muscle in body, origin anterior superior spine of the ilium and insterts on the medical aspect of the proximal end of tibia. Crosses both hip and knee joint. Flexion, abduction, and external rotation of hip joint
rectus femoris
part of quads, crosses knee and hip joints, orgin on anterior inferior iliac spine and insters on the tibial tuberosity. Flexes hip joint and weak abductor
Tensor fasciae latae
helps form iliotibial band, insterts lateral condyle of tibia. Flexes and abducts hip joint
pectineus
orgin anterial superior aspec of the pubic bone and insterts on the femur just distal to the lesser trochanter. Crosses the hip. Flexes hip, strong adductor and external rotator of hip
Biceps femoris
Part of ham string, orgin ischial tuberosity. extension of the hip joint and flexion of the knee joint. Orgin on ischial tuberosity and linea aspera of the femur insterts head of fibula
iliotibial (IT) band
the tensor fasciae latae and gluteus maximus, excessive flexion or extension or trauma can cause inflammation of bursa, assists with flexion and internal rotation, assists with extension and external rotation
quads
rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus intermedius and vastus medialis
hamstring
biceps femoris, semitendinosus and semimembranosus
Semitendinosus
part of hamstring, orgin ischial tuberosity and inserts ont he medial spect of the tibia
Semimembranosus
part of hamstring, orgin ischial tuberosity and inserts on the medial condyle of tibia, extends hip and assists with internal rotation of the hip joint
gluteus maximus
orgin posterior aspect of ilium, sacrum, and coccyx, inserts lateral condyle of tibia, abduction, adduction of hip
piriformis
orgin upper portion of sacrum crosses greater sciatic notch and inserts upper surface of the greater trochanter. can cause strain it can impinge the sciatic nerve
Gemellus superior
orgin spine of ischium, inserts medial aspect of the greater trochanter, externally rotates the hip joint
Internal obturator
orgin inner surface of obturator foramen of pelvis, insterts on medial aspect of the greater trochanter, externally rotates the hip joint
Gemellus inferior
origin ischial tuberosity, inserts medial
aspect of the greater trochanter, externally rotates the hip joint
External obturator
origin outer surface of the
pubic bone, inserts on the trochanteric
fossa of the femur, externally rotates the hip joint
Quadratus femoris
origin ischial tuberosity, inserts on the intertrochanteric ridge of the femur, externally rotates the hip joint
Adductor longus
origin body of the pubic bone, inserts on
the middle third of the linea aspera of the femur, adduction of the hip, assists with flexion and external rotation
Adductor brevis
orgin on the body and inferior surface of the pubic bone, inserts on the proximal third of the
linea aspera of the femur, adduction of the hip, assists with external
rotation and flexion
Adductor magnus
orgin inferior surface of the pubic bone, ischium, and ischial tuberosity, inserts linea aspera and the adductor tubercle of the femur, adducts flexes external rotation of hip joint
