Muscles And Movement Flashcards
Muscle
Tissue that attaches to bones and pulls others to allow movement
Tendon
Attaches muscle to bone allowing the muscle to pull the bone
Ligament
Joins bone to bone, keeping joints stable
Cartilage
Tissue at the ends of bones to act as a shock absorber and stop the bones wearing away at each other. Also in nose and outer ear
Synovial fluid
Fluid at joints
Joint
Where two or more bones meet
Ball and socket joint
Allows 360° movement all around. E.g. shoulder, thigh.
Hinge joint
180° one way movement. E.g. knee, elbow
Pivot joint
360° movement all around. E.g. neck. Our neck only has 180° movement due to muscle
Fused joint
No movement as different bones now attached.
Antagonistic muscle pairs
When muscles work in pairs, as the can only pull. When one contracts, the other relaxes. E.g. biceps and triceps
