Muscles and Ligaments Flashcards

1
Q

Masseter

A
  • Origin: Zygomatic arch
  • Insertion: Lateral surface of ramus, coronoid process, angle of mandible
  • Action: Mandible elevated and teeth contact; Sup portion protrudes mandible and biting force; Deep portion stabilizes mandible

Q

Temporalis

A
  • Origin: Temporal fossa, temporal fascia
  • Insertion: Coronoid process and anterior border of ramus
  • Action: Elevates mandible, retracts and positions mandible, clenches teeth

Q

Medial Pterygoid

A
  • Origin: Medial surface of lateral pterygoid plate, pyramidal process, and maxillary tuberosity
  • Insertion: Posterior and lower part of medial surface of ramus and angle of mandible
  • Action: Elevates and protrudes mandible, assists rotary movements (lateral) of mandible

Q

Lateral Pterygoid (Inferior)

A
  • Origin: Lateral surface of lateral pterygoid plate
  • Insertion: Anterior portion of condylar neck and TMJ capsule
  • Action: Protrusion of mandible (bilateral), mediotrusion of mandible to opposite side (unilateral), assists digastric in opening mandible

Q

Lateral Pterygoid (Superior)

A
  • Origin: Infratemporal surface of greater wing of sphenoid
  • Insertion: Articular capsule, disc, and neck of condyle
  • Action: Closure of mandible, “power stroke” of mandible (chewing against resistance)

Q

Digastric

A

Anterior Belly
- Origin: Mastoid Notch
- Insertion: Intermediate tendon of hyoid
Posterior Belly
- Origin: Lingual surface of mandible
- Insertion: Intermediate tendon of hyoid
- Action: Depress and pull mandible backward (bilateral), Elevate hyoid and facilitate swallowing (when mandible stabilized)
