Muscles And Bones Mr Labour Flashcards
Bones enable movement by…
Allowing muscles to connect to the bones and pull them
What are bones made up of
A calcium compounds which is very hard
A protein called collagen which is flexible
Where are joints
They exist where two or more bones meet
Where do we have cartilage
On the end of our bones to stop them rubbing together
What are joints stabilised by
Ligaments which are attach bone to bone
Why must ligaments be able to stretch
So they can be stretched without snapping
What do tendons attach
Muscle to bone so that as the muscles contract it will pull the bones towards it
Why is it important that the tendons don’t stretch
All of the force is transferred to move the bone
What are covered in cartilage
The ends of your bones which is very smooth to reduce friction and allow the joint to move freely
What does synovial fluid surround
The joint cushioning it from impacts and further reducing friction
What are muscles mostly made up of
Muscle cells that can shorten in length
When a muscle contracts…
It shortens creating a pull on a muscle
To move a muscle back to its original place what must happen
Another muscle must pull it back therefore they must work in antagonist pairs
What are antagonist pairs
Muscles that work together to move a bone
One relaxes whilst the other pulls
Antagonist pairs
