INNERVATION:
Dorsal rami lower T, all L
ACTION:
Extension, lateral flexion, rotation of L spine; lateral movement of pelvis
Iliocostalis Thoracis

Dorsal rami T1-T6
ACTION:
Extension, lateral flexion T spine
Iliocostalis Cervicis
INNERVATION:
Dorsal rami T1, T2; rarely C8
ACTION:
Extension, lateral flexion, rotation of L spine; lateral movement of pelvis
Longissimus Cervicis

Dorsal rami C4-C8; T1-T2
ACTION:
Lateral flexion of neck; bilaterally extend neck
Longissimus Capitis

Rotate and laterally flex head; bilaterally extend neck

Extend T spine

Extension, rotation and lateral flexion of C spine; bilaterally extend neck

Turns face to side; bilaterally extends head (neck inadvertently)
Multifidus

ACTION:
Turns face to side; bilaterally extends head

Lateral flexion of head; bilaterally extends head
Obliquus Capitis Inferior

Turns face to side

Ventral rami T12, L1-L3 or L4
ACTION:
Steadies origin of diaphragm; when pelvis is fixed, it will flex L spine; bilaterally extends L spine; stabilizes & depresses 12th rib

Intercostal nerves, ventral rami T9-T11; Subcostal nerves, ventral ramus T12
ACTION:
Elevates upper 5 ribs in inspiration
Longus Colli
INNERVATION:
Ventral rami C2-C6, sometimes C7
ACTION:
Flexion and extension of neck; rotation to the contralateral side
Longus capitis
INNERVATION:
Ventral rami C1-C3
ACTION:
Flex the head
Rectus capitis anterior
INNERVATION:
Ventral rami C1, C2
ACTION:
Flex the head
Rectus capitis lateralis
INNERVATION:

Laterally flex head to ipsilateral side
Rectus Capitis Posterior Minor
INNERVATION:

Extends head
Longissimus Thoracis

ACTION:
Lateral flexion T spine & ribs (L spine inadvertently); bilaterally act in extension of T & L spine, hold T & L spine erect (increases L lordosis); lateral movement of pelvis
