Muscle Tissue Flashcards
Muscle tissue
Requires rich blood supply. Skeletal, smooth and cardiac
Skeletal muscle
The muscles that more the bones. Its striated. Its voluntary as its under conscious control.
Cells are cylindrical, contain multiple nuclei. Contraction stimulated by motor nerve impulses originating in the brain or spinal cord and ending at neuromuscular junction.
Smooth muscle
Non-striated, visceral and involuntary. Some has the ability to initiate its own contractions.Innervated by autonomic ns. Rich in mitochondria. Slow and sustained activity. Fatigues much more slowly than skeletal. Usually organised in sheets in the walls of hollow organs. Regulates diameter of blood vessels and parts of the respiratory tract. Propels things along alimentary tract. Expels contents of urinary bladder and uterus.
Cardiac muscle
Only in the heart wall. Striations can be seen. Like a sheet of muscle rather than individual fibres. Muscle fibres do not need to be stimulated individually.
