Muscle terms/concepts/conditions Flashcards
Aerobic endurance
Ability to sustain activity
Aerobic Respiration
Production of ATP with the use of oxygen
Aerobic Respiration Glycolysis
Coverts glucose into pyruvate via a series of metabolic reactions
Aerobic Respiration Oxidative Phosphorylation
More efficient means of energy production
Anaerobic threshold
Lactate inflection point is the exercise intensity at which the blood concentration of lactate and/or lactic acid begins to increase rapidly
Cramp
Continuous, involuntary, painful, and localized contraction of an entire muscle group, individual single cell muscle, or select muscle fibers
Disuse Atrophy
A decrease in the size of muscles in the body
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
An inherited disorder of progressive weakness
Isometric Contractions
Tightening contractions of a specific muscle or group of muscles
Isotonic contractions
Produces limb movement without a change in muscle tension
Muscle fatigue
When muscles that were initially generating a normal amount of force, then experiencing a declining ability to generate force
Muscle tone
The amount of tension (or resistance to movement) in muscles. Contributes to control, speed, and amount of movement we can achieve.
Myasthenia Gravis
A weakness and rapid fatigue of muscles under voluntary control
Oxygen debt
Excess post-exercise oxygen consumption is a measurably increased rate of oxygen intake following strenuous activity
RICE
Rest and protect the injured or sore area
