Muscle of Mastication Flashcards
Number of muscles of mastication
4
Muscles of mastication are
- Masseter
- Temporalis
- Lateral pterygoid
- Medial pterygoid
These muscles develop from _________
Mesoderm of first pharyngeal arch
These muscles develop from _________
Mesoderm of first pharyngeal arch
These muscles are innervated by
Third division of the trigeminal nerve, the mandibular nerve (CN V3)
Masseter
It’s quandrangular in shape. It lies superficial to the pterygoid and temporalis muscle
Parts of masseter
It has two parts namely: deep and superficial
Origin of masseter muscle
Superficial part: zygomatic process of the maxilla and anterior 2/3 of the lower border of the zygomatic arch
Deep: originates from the zygomatic arch if the temporal bone (posterior 1/3)
Insertion of masseter
Rsmus of the mandible and angle of the mandible
Actions of masseter
Elevation of the mandible (closes the mouth)
Assists in protraction
Innervation of the masseter
Masseteric nerve of the mandibular diviosn of the trigeminal nerve
