Flexes neck, move the shoulder forward. Long muscle runs from the top of the cervical spine to the shoulder.
Brachiocephalicus
Elevates the shoulder, and draws the scapula upward, forward, and backward.
At Withers
Trapezius/Rhomboids (deep)*
Extends the shoulder joint.* In the horses shoulder under the deltoid.
Supraspinatus (deep)*
Rotates arm (foreleg) outward.
In the horses shoulder, underneath the deltoid and behind the supraspinatus muscle.
Infraspinatus (deep)
Extends the shoulder joint.*
In shoulder above infraspinatus and in front of tricep.
Deltoid
Flexes shoulder joint.
In shoulder, below and to the right of deltoid.
Tricep
Extends forelimb.
Front of upper foreleg & Chest.
Bicep & Anterior pectoral
Draws trunk to proper level when the legs are planted. Front of ribs.
Serratus thoracis
Draws the foreleg backward.
Front of belly.
Posterior pectoral
Bends and flexes the foreleg.
Front of foreleg.
Extensor capri radialis*
Lateral flexion.
Large back muscle from spine to humerus.
Latissimus dorsi
Extends back, lateral flexion.
Longest muscle in back, runs from the sacrum to the withers.
Longissimus dorsi
Supports the rib cage and aids in respiration.
Over rib cage.
Intercostal
Draws hind leg under. Behind rib cage on trunk.
Oblique
Supports the back.
Mid-belly.
Rectus abdominus
Forward impulsion and hind end action.
Located top of hind end.
Gluteus
Extends the hock.
Interior butt top of leg.
Semimembranosus
Extends the hip and the hock.
On rear end, outer side of semimembranosus.
Semitendinosus
Extends the hind leg, hip, and hock, and flexes the stifle.
On rear end between gluteus and semitendinosus.
Bicep femoris
Extends the stifle and flex hip.*
Top front of hind leg.
Tensor fascia latae*
