muscle attachments Flashcards
External intercostal
rib to rib oriented from superior-lateral to inferior medial
elevate ribs
intercostal nerve
anterior and posterior intercostal artery
Internal intercostal
rib to rib oriented from superior-medial to inferior lateral
depress ribs
intercostal nerve
anterior and posterior intercostal artery
Transversus thoracis
posterior sternum to costal cartilages
depress ribs
intercostal nerves
internal thoracic and anterior intercostal arteries
Cremaster
medial edge of internal oblique to spermatic cord
elevate testis
genitofemoral nerve
cremasteric artery (off inferior epigastric)
Diaphragm
xiphoid process, inner surface of lower ribs and costal cartilages, medial and lateral arcuate ligaments, lumbar vertebrae via the crura to the central tendon
inspiration (negative thoracic pressure by inferior displacement)
phrenic nerve
musculophrenic, inferior phrenic, subcostal and lower posterior intercostal artery
External oblique
lower 8 ribs to iliac crest and rectus sheath
flexion and rotation of the trunk, compression of the abdominal cavity
ventral rami T7-T12
superior epigastric, inferior epigastric, subcostal, lower posterior intercostal, lumbar, superficial circumflex iliac, deep circumflex iliac arteries
Internal oblique
thoracolumbar fascia to inguinal ligament, iliac crest and rectus sheath
flexion and rotation of the trunk, compression of the abdominal cavity
lower thoracic and L1 ventral rami
superior epigastric, inferior epigastric, subcostal, lower posterior intercostal, lumbar, superficial circumflex iliac, deep circumflex iliac arteries
Quadratus Lumborum
12th rib to iliolumbar ligament and iliac crest
extension and lateral flexion of trunk, fixes 12th rib during respiration
ventral rami T12-L3
subcostal, lumbar, iliolumbar arteries
Rectus abdominis
xiphoid process and adjacent costal cartilages to pubic crest and tubercle
flexion of trunk and compression of abdominal cavity
lower thoracic ventral rami
superior epigastric, inferior epigastric
Transversus abdominis
lower six costal cartilages and thoracolumbar fascia to inguinal ligament, iliac crest and rectus sheath
compression of abdominal cavity
lower thoracic and L1 ventral rami
superior epigastric, inferior epigastric, subcostal, lower posterior intercostal, lumbar, superficial circumflex iliac and deep circumflex iliac
coccygeus
ischial spine and sacrospinous ligament to coccyx
support and compress posterior pelvic floor
ventral rami S4-S5
inferior gluteal, internal pudendal, inferior rectal arteries
levator ani
pubic symphysis, obturator fascia, and ischial spine to the midline raphe and anococcyeal ligament
support pelvic viscera and compress rectum and vagina
pudendal nerve (inferior rectal branches) and S4
inferior gluteal, internal pudendal, inferior rectal and inferior vesical arteries
Bulbospongiosus
median raphe and perineal body (central tendon) to surround bulb of penis or surrounds vestibular bulb, vaginal orifice and clitoris
male: empty urethra, maintain erection, contracts during ejaculation
female: constricts vaginal orifice and contributes to erection of clitoris
PERINEAL branch of pudendal nerve
internal pudendal artery
Ischiocavernosus
ischial tuberosity and ramus to aponeurosis surrounding crus of penis or clitoris
compress crus during erection
perineal branch of pudendal nerve
internal pudendal artery
Sphincter ani externus
perineal body to anococcygeal raphe
closes anal canal and fixes perineal body
inferior rectal branch of pudendal nerve
internal pudendal artery
