Muscle Architecture Flashcards
What are the two types of muscle fibres, what are they specialised for and how?
Type I slow twitch fibres for long endurance as they have a slow contraction time with low force production.
Type II fast twitch fibres for short fast outbursts as they have a fast contraction time with high force production.
What is the Myotendinous junction?
The junction between the tendon and a muscle fibre.
What is the Neuromuscular junction?
The junction between the terminal of a motoneuron and a muscle fibre/
How is an action potential initiated at the Neuromuscular junction?
Acetylcholine is released into the synaptic cleft and binds to acetylcholine receptors in the post-synaptic membrane. Its binding leads to the influx of sodium and outflux of potassium, resulting in depolarisation of the muscle and contraction.
What are the four constituents of the basement membrane that surrounds each muscle fibre?
Perlecan, Laminin, Collagen IV and Nidogen.
What are the thick and thin filaments of myofibrils, respectively?
Thick filaments = myosin
Thin filaments = actin.
What are satellite cells and where are they located?
They are muscle stem cells located between the sarcolemma and basement membrane.
