Muscle Activity during Gait Flashcards
What is an Isometric contraction
A muscle contratcion without motion, used to stabalise a joint
What is an Eccentric Contraction
A lengthening of the muscle generally involved in lowering or slowing a movement down
What is a Concentric contraction
When the total length of the muscle shortens to produce tension
During the Initial contact phase of the Gait cycle which muscles will be performing eccentric contractions and why
Tibialis Anterior
Extensor Digitorum Longus
Extensor Digitorum Brevis
Extensor Hallucis Brevis
Extensor Hallucis Loungus
They eccentrically contract to lower the foot to the ground.
They are further activated isometrically during the swing phase to ensure the clearance of the foot from the ground
During Midstance which muscles will perform an eccentric contraction and why
Tibialis Posterior
Gastrocnemuis
Soleus
Flexor Hallucis
Flexor Digitorum Longus
Peroneus Longus
Peroneus Brevis
These muscles aim to slow the advance of the Tibia over the foot
They transition to a concentric contraction during the end of the Stance Phase (Heel Off Toe Off) in order to propell the foot forward
