Muscle Actions Flashcards
Coracobrachialis
Flexion and adduction of shoulder joint
Levator Scapulae
origin fixed: Elevates scapula
insertion fixed: Lat flexes cervical vertebrae and rotates bilaterally: may assist in extension
Latissimus Dorsi
extension, adduction, medial rotations of shoulder
Lower Trapezius
Scapular adduction, depression, + upward rotation
Middle Trapezius
Scapular Adduction
Upper Trapezius
Elevation of scapula + shoulder, capital ext, rotation of head to opposite side
Pectoralis Minor
Scapular Protraction, elevation of ribs in forced inspiration w/ scapula fixed by elevator scapula
Pectoralis Major
Whole: Adducts and medially rotates humerus, elevation of sternum in forced inspiration
Pectoralis Major (Clavicle)
Horizontal shoulder adduction, flexion and medial rotation
Pectoralis Major (Stern)
horizontal shoulder adduction, shoulder extension
Teres Major
Medially rotates, adducts and extends the shoulder joint
Subscapularis
Medially rotates the shoulder joint, + stabilizes the head of the humerus in the glenoid cavity during movements of the joint
Supraspinatus
Abducts the shoulder joint and stabilizes the head of the humerus in the glenoid cavity
Infraspinatus
Stabilize and externally rotate
Teres Minor
Laterally rotates the shoulder joint and stabilizes the head of the humerus in the glenoid cavity
Rhomboid Major
Scapular retraction
Rhomboid Minor
Scapular retraction and elevation
Serratus Anterior
Scapular abduction, holds scapula against thoracic wall, works w/ trap to rotate scapula upward
Deltoid
Abduction of shoulder
Middle Deltoid
Abduction of the shoulder joint, performed chiefly by the middle fibers w/ stabilization by the ant. and post. fibers
Triceps
Shoulder(long head) and elbow extension
Biceps
Supinates forearm when elbow is flexed
Scalenes
Cx flexion, lateral flexion same side, aides inspiration
Transverse Abdominus
Supports abdominal wall, aides forced expiration and raising intra abdominal pressure
Sternocleidomastoid
(unilateral) Lateral flex head to same side, rotates head to opposite side; bilaterally extends head
Internal oblique
Lateral flexion and rotate same side, bilaterally flexes, abdominal bracing
External oblique
rotate and side bend trunk
Rectus abdominis
Flexes trunk, aids forced expiration and raise intra-abdominal pressure
Intercostalis
extension of spine
Longissimus
spine extension
Spinalis
spine extension
Quadratus Lumborum
Hip hiker, lateral bend same side, bilateral help w/ bearing down
Anconeus
Assists triceps with elbow extension
Opponens pollicis
opposition of thumb
Palmar interossei
adduct digits 1,2,4,5 towards digit 3
Dorsal interossei
abducts fingers around digit 3 (DAB) assist to flex MCP while extending IPs
Lumbricals
Flex MCPs w/ IPs extended
Pronator Teres
Pronation of forearm, assist w/ elbow flexion
Pronator quadratus
Pronation of forearm
Supinator
Supination
Extensor digiti minimi
extension of 5th digit @ MCP, PIP, DIP joints assists wrist extension and abduction of 5th digit
extensor digitorum
extends MCP, PIP, DIP joints of digits 2-5, assists wrist extension, IP extension in conjunction with hand intrinsics (2-5)
Brachioradialis
elbow flexion with the forearm in neutral
Brachialis
Flexes forearm in all position
Flexor carpi radialis
flexion and radial deviation (abduction) of wrist
Palmaris longus
Tenses palmar aponeurosis, assists wrist flexion (cups hand)
Extensor pollicis brevis
Extends MCP joint of thumb and extension and abduction of CMs joint of thumb, assists w/ radial deviation and wrist extension
Extensor indicis
Extension of 2nd finger @ MCP, IP extension in conjunction with hand intrinsics of index finger, wrist extension
Abductor pollicis longus
Extension and abduction of thumb @ CMC joint: radial deviation
Extensor pollicis longus
Extension of thumb at IP joint, assist with CMC and MP extensions and radial deviation
Extensor Carpi radialis longus
Extend and radially deviate wrist, assist elbow flexion
Abductor pollicis brevis
Abduction @ CMC and MCP joints of thumb assist with thumb opposition and IP extension
Adductor Pollicis
adduction of CMC,, joint of thumb, assists thumb, MCP adduction and flexion
Flexor pollicis brevis
Flexion of MP and CMC joints; thumb opposition
Flexor digiti minimi
Flex MCP joint, assists opposition
Abductor digiti minimi
abduction of 5th digit, opposition of 5th digit, MCP flexion and IP extension
Opponens digiti minimi
Opposition of pinky to thumb
Flexor carpi ulnaris
Flexes wrist and ulnarly deviates wrist
Flexor digitorum superficialis
