Muscels Flashcards
Functions of the Muscular System
movement
- Skeletal/Voluntary muscles
posture
- Skeletal/Voluntary muscles.
Bodily functions
- Smooth and cardiac muscles (involuntary muscle.)
Ability to produce heat
what are muscles capable of
Muscles are only capable of two actions: contraction (shortening) and relaxation (lengthening).
Types of Muscles
skeletal
smooth
cardiac
Smooth
Involuntary Control: We cannot consciously control these muscles.
Structure: Composed of spindle-shaped cells.
Eg. Digestive system
Skeletal
Attached to Bones: Skeletal muscles connect to bones to form the skeleton.
Voluntary Control: We can control them through the Central Nervous System.
Structure: Made up of striped and striated cells.
Cardiac
Location: Found in the walls of the heart.
Involuntary Control: We cannot consciously control them.
Structure: Striped (striated) appearance.
Deltoids major movement
shoulder abduction
Biceps major movement
Elbow flexion
Hamstrings
Hip extension/ knee extension
Tendon
Muscle –> Bone
Ligament
Bone –> Bone
- provides stability
- Cross over Joints
Cartilage
Smooth, slightly elastic tissue
- soft gel - like padding
between bones - protects joints, facilitates movements
