Murphy Drug Action Flashcards
Pharmacokinetics vs. Pharmacodynamics
Pharmacokinetics - what the body does to drugs
Pharmacodynamics - what drugs do to the body
FDA approved ACE inhibitors for hypertension
Benazopril (Lotensin) Captopril (Capoten) Enalapril/Enalaprilat (Vasotec) Fosinopril (Monopril) Lisinopril (Zestril and Prinivil) Moexipril (Univasc) Perindopril (Aceon) Quinapril (Accupril) Ramipril (Altace) Trandolapril (Mavik)
Drug Response
f (Drug Efficacy)
Drug Dose or Concentration
f (1/Drug Potency)
Efficacy vs. Potency
Efficacy is defined as the maximum effect a drug can produce, regardless of the dose (how big). Potency is related to the amount of drug needed to produce a given effect (how much); it is often quantified by the ED50 or EC50.
ED50 or EC50
The drug dose or concentration that causes 50% of the maximum effect.
Therapeutic Window
The range of drug concentrations providing therapeutic effect with minimal side effects. The higher the concentration past the therapeutic window increases the likelihood of adverse side effects.
