MUP Flashcards
Intro
A more recent example of a government response to inequalities in Scotland is the Scottish Governments introduction of Minimum Unit Pricing.
Explain 1
MUP was introduced to combat excessive alcohol consumption, particularly in deprived areas. Right now, the policy has a price floor of 50p per unit of alcohol, which has significantly reduced the availability of cheap, high-strength alcoholic drinks.
Example 1
This is illustrated by reports from the University of Glasgow, who indicate that MUP has led to a 13.4% reduction in alcohol-related deaths and a 4.1% drop in hospital admissions.
Analysis 1
This clearly proves that Minimum Unit Pricing has a positive outcome, particularly for those living in less affluent areas, as it indicates that the policy is effectively addressing health disparities and improving public health for vulnerable populations who often face higher rates of alcohol-related harm.
Rebuttal
Furthermore, the Scottish Government has also introduced the roll out of its Baby Box scheme.
Explain 2
This is because A baby box is a cardboard box that provides a safe sleeping space for newborns. It includes a mattress and essentials like clothes and diapers, helping promote safe sleep and support new parents. It also aims to ensure that all new parents have access to essential items for their babies, regardless of their economic situation.
Example 2
For instance, since 2017 until March 1st, 2024, 292,720 baby boxes have been delivered and as a result, 100,000 fewer children will live in poverty in 2024-25.
Analysis 2
This suggests that by reducing the number of children living in poverty, it promotes greater equity in access to health and developmental support, helping to level the playing field for disadvantaged children from the start of their lives.
Link
Overall, this shows that despite MUP attempting to reduce alcohol consumption in deprived areas, it has also led to the causation of financial difficulties in these groups as they see it has their ‘only luxury.’ However, baby boxes have been deemed completely successful, and help all children get the same fair start at life.
