Mumbai Housing Flashcards
Solution to lack of clean water and sanitation
Provide better water supply, sanitation, electricity and sewage systems to reduce disease and improve health and living conditions.
How effective is providing water supply, electricity etc..
The pipes haven’t reached all areas of the shanty towns as new shanty towns are being built up all the time and authorities can’t keep up with new growth.
If people continue to tap into water, the water will still be contaminated
Solution to rubbish and sewers in streets
Put in roads so that sewers are covered up and rubbish trucks can get in to clear rubbish
How effective is putting in roads
Successful in improving hygiene and disease is less likely. However many streets are too narrow for trucks to fit down so rubbish stays.
Solution to health problems and the high birth rate
Educate people on better diets and contraception. Use medical facilities to reduce disease. Give nursery education so that children learn about hygiene. Offer Family Planning so that future overcrowding can be controlled.
Effectiveness of education
Education must be free as many can’t afford it.
Successful as the birth rate dropped from 24 per 1000 in 2000 to 20 per 1000 in 2011.
Solutions to poor communities and areas.
Encourage residents to form cooperatives and organise themselves to help improve the area
Effectiveness of encouraging residents
This has worked as people have a real sense of community and are happy to work with others for the common good.
