Q

background

A

memory is a basic cognitive pricess used to encode, store and retrieve information. multi store model made by ATKINSON AND SHIFFRIN
Memory consists of 3 seperate components: sensory memory store, short term memory and long term memory
information flows from sensory memory to long term memory if certain conditions are met

Q

sensory memory

A

very short, 1 sec of visual 2-5 for auditory

Capacity: everything in the perceptual field

Q

short term memory

A

duration: not normally longer than 30 secs, rehearsal increases this
capacity: roughly 7 chunks of info, multipe units of info can be grouped into a chunk

conditions to move: rehearsal

Q

procedure

A

15 words read out to participants
asked to free recall

3 conditions
free recall immediately after hearing words
filler activity(counting backwards)
then free recall
a longer filler activity then free recall
each participant given 15 lists, 5 for each condition
15 dependant variables

Q

results

A

without filler task both aspects of SERIAL POSITION effect could be observed
in condition with filler primary effect (rememberin first ones) stayed but recency effect (rememberin last ones) disappeared

Q

conclusion

A

results fit well into msm
stm and ltm are 2 seperate memorh stores
info moves from stm to ltm when rehearsed
duration of stm is around 30 secs
first words repeated more so primary effect doesnt disspear
last several may be easy without filler coz stm
