Multiple Question Test Flashcards
What factors effect V1 (take off decision speed)?
- Gross weight (increased gross weight = increase in V1)
- Flap setting
- Density altitude (requires higher TAS)
- Temperature (Increase temps=increase TAS)
- Contamination (Slush or snow covered will increase TAS)
What speed is affected if you have a contaminated runway?
V1
On take-off you experience an engine failure at 126 KIAS. V1 is 125 KIAS, what would you do?
Continue take off, rotate at Vr, and climb out at V2
How does a headwind effect takeoff roll?
Headwind decreases takeoff roll as GS is lower for a given IAS
How does a tailwind effect takeoff distance?
Tailwind increases takeoff roll as GS is higher for given IAS.
How does high density altitude effect takeoff roll?
Increases takeoff roll due to increase in TAS which yields a higher GS for a given IAS.
When must you advise ATC when making speed adjustments?
10% KIAS or 5% of TAS whichever is greater
Where does the fire bottle spray the agent in the event of engine fire?
In the engine bay or compartment, not the combustion chamber
What converts AC to DC power?
Transformer rectifier
How are batteries effected when connected in series?
Adss voltage but not amperage
How are batteries effected when connected in parallel?
Adds amperage but not voltage
What happens when you pull the fire handle?
- Cuts off fuel by closing firewall fuel shutoff valve
- Cuts off hydraulic fluid to any engine driven pumps
- Closes any bleed air valves
- Deactivates electrical generator on that engine
- Arms the fire extinguisher
What is the correct sequence for starting a turbine engine?
Air, ignition, and fuel
What do you do if you encounter torching on engine start?
Cut off fuel and leave starter engaged
What does a red disk ruptured or missing indicate?
Thermal discharge
What does a yellow disk rupture indicate?
Intentional discharge of the fire extinguisher
What is the relationship between AOA and TAS as altitude increases?
Increase in altitude=TAS increase for a given IAS and AOA
TAS increases with an incrase in altitude and increase in temperature
What effects landing distance more, weight or speed?
Aircraft speed has a greater effect onlanding distance (a 10% increase in speed causes a 21% increase in landing distance where a 2% increase in wight increases landing distance by 2%)
How does density altitude increase take off roll? Compare Denver to Atlanta
- IAS remains the same
- Increase in density altitude increases TAS which increases GS for takeoff speed
- Decrease in engine thrust
- A 1000 foot increase in density altitude increases take off by 7%
How is an aircraft effected when loaded to its aft CG?
- Stalls at a lower IAS
- Cruises faster
- Increase in Vmc (due to decreased moment arm from rudder)
- Increased range
- Unstable along longitudinal axis
What two factors effect lift in a turn?
Airspeed and AOA
What is the purpose of vortex generator?
They delay boundry layer seperation and prevent shock waves from forming over flight surfaces as airspeeds approach Mcrit
*Mcrit: Point in which airflow over the wing first reaches, but does no exceed the speed of sound.
What is the advantage of a swept wing aircraft?
Increase Mcrit
*Mcrit: Point in which airflow over the wing first reaches, but does not exceed the speed of sound.
What is the disadvantage of swept wing design?
Dutch roll tendancy
What is mach tuck?
As an aircraft approaches the speed of sound its wing center of pressure moves aft. As it moves aft, it creates a pitch down moment which there by increases airspeed and worsens situation.
You are a Captain on a MD-88 with the left engine inoperative. Given the winds are 210 at 30 knots and your choice of runways are 18/36 or 12/30, which runway do you land on?
Always keep the inoperative engine downwind. Therefore you elect to land runway 18
When are the wingtip vortices the strongest?
When the aircraft is heavy, clean, and slow.
Usually during takeoff, climb, and landing
What is the greatest danger of a slow moving warm front?
Imbedded thunderstorms
What is the standard temperature lapse rate?
3.5 degrees F/1000’ or 2 degrees C/1000’
How would you attempt to deviate around a thunderstorm?
- Pass it by at least 20 NM on the upwind side
- You may go over it by 1000’ for every 10 knots of wind at the top
You are headed 120 magnetic on a track of 090 and there is a thunderstorm on your nose. Which way do you go?
You are crabbing to the right so the winds are out of the south. You want to pass the thunderstorm on the upwind side so you deviate to the south.
In the event that you encounter wind shear, what do you do?
Apply maximum power, increase pitch angle to the stick shaker, and hold until the wind shear is dissipated.
What are the characteristics of a low pressure system?
Unstable air, cyclonic (counter clockwise) air flow
What is the best way to determine if you have a frontal passage?
- Shift in the winds
- cold front passage winds shift from SW to NW
- warm front passage winds shift from SE to SW
What speed is effected if you have a contaminated runway?
