Multimedia Systems Flashcards
what are the seven types of media
Text
Hypertext
Numbers
Audio
Images
Animation
Video
what the different modes of display
Screen
Speakers
what is the main advantage of multimedia over print
Multimedia allows for more interaction with the content and display the information in a more variety of options than print
What types of media are involved with storing
Images
Audio
Video
what is the formula for Image storage
File size = (Horiztonal x vertical x bit depth) / 8
how to convert file sizes from bytes to kb
divide by 1024
what is sampling rate
the number of times a sample is taken of sound
what is bit depth
the number of bits per pixel. This is determine by how many colours are possible in the image
what is the sample size
the bit resolution of each sample
what is the formula for Audio Storage
File size = (Sample rate x Sample x time)/8
what is the frame rate
the number of frames of the video shown each second
what is the formula for video storage
File size = Frame rate x time in seconds x frame size
note that the frame size is calculated the same way as an in image
what is the difference between mono and stero audio files
stero audio files have double the size of mono files
what are the two types of animations
Cell-based and path-based
what is cell-based animation
involves drawing and displaying individual frames or cells. Each frame is stored separately and loaded into a graphics page of primary memory. It is the traditional method of animation
what is path-based animation
it involves displaying the movement of objects onto a fixed background in a particular sequence or path. the pixels in the background do no change, only those for the moving object. This saves memory and processing time. This is done by a process called tweening which generates the itermediate frames between two objects in computer animation from the path.
What is morphing
it is the smooth change between two different images. It changes the shape, size, dimension, and colour of one image into those of another.
what is warping
warping involves transforming or distorting a portion of the image. it divides the image into objects that can be manipulated
What are some people in multimedia systems
Content providers
System designers
Project managers
Technical staff
What is a content provider
They are people who provide the material for the multimedia product. This may include text, graphics sketches or final drawings, video footage and audio tracks
What is a system designer
plans and organises the hardware and software required for the presentation
What is the project manager
organises the scheduling of various components of the
product, provides overall supervision of the
components and ensures that all components are delivered on time.
what is technical staff
includes a variety of artists and technicians who edit the graphic and video material, text and all other material into appropriate formats for the final document. It also includes layout and design personnel who work to develop an overall theme and look of the product
What are the major areas of multimedia systems
Education and training
Leisure and entertainment
Information
Vitrual reality and simulations
What are education and training multimedia systems
They are multimedia systems that are very effective system that help people to learn. A good multimedia product users different media types to maintain te user’s interest. An example product is Computer-based training products.
What a Leisure and entertainment Multimedia systems
they are multimedia systems designed for leisure and entertainment. They are generally computer games.
What is Virtual realtiy
VR for short, is the use of computer modelling and simulation to enable a person to interact with an artificial envrionment. an example of multiemdia systems of VR and simulations are Flight simulations.
What are three design priniciples
Consistent
Navigation
Simple
What are the three accepted design principles to format text.
Characters: avoid using too many fonts
Screen layout: Appropriate conventions exist for column width, alignment, line spacing, character spacing, indentation, hyphenation and kerning
Text colour: Colour contributes to the style and theme of a multimedia product and draws attention to the text.
What are the different Screen technology
Cathode ray tube (CRT)
Liquid crystal displays (LCD)
Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED)
Touch screens
What the three different types of projectors
Digitial Light Processing (DLP)
Liquid Crystal displays (LCD)
Liquid crystal on silicon (LCos)
What are the four types of doccumentation for Presentation Software
On-screen presentations
Audience handouts
Overhead Transparencies
Speaker’s notes
What is on-screen presentations
they are slides displayed on a monitor or projected onto a screen.
What is audience handouts
They are images of two or more slides on a page that are given to people who attend the presentation.
What is Speaker’s notes
they are the notes the speaker needs when discussing the slides.
What is Overhead transparencies
They are slides printed as an overhead transparency in black and white or in colour using either portrait or landscape orientation.
What is a transition
it is special effect used to change from one image or screen to another.
What are the different application software
Word processors
Spreadsheets
Graphics software
Audio software
Video software
Project management software.
What is application software
it is software that is used for a specific task.
What is authoring software
It is software used to combine text, graphics, animation, audio and video into a multimedia product. The software also allows the user to create interactivity.
What is animation software
Software that takes individual images and creates the illusion of movement
What is the difference between a Bitmap graphic and a Vector Graphic
A Bitmap graphic is comprised of a collection of bits where as a Vector graphic is created using mathematical definitions.
Bitmap images become distorted and pixelated when resized whereas Vectors can be scaled withouth any loss in quality.
