Relates to the degree of adaptation that has taken place; a process in which members of one cultural group adopt the beliefs and behaviors of another group
Acculturation
The process of becoming absorbed into another culture , adopting its characteristics, and developing a new cultural identity
Assimilation
The ethical principle that embodies the right of self-determination
Autonomy
The state or quality of being kind and charitable; a principle that requires doing good or removing harm
Beneficence
Refers to the degree of adaptation to which a person has adapted to the dominant culture or retained their traditional practices
Cultural Adaptation
The ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures
Cultural Competence
Refers to a person’s belief that his or her culture is superior to another one
Cultural Ethnocentricity
When one is able to see and appreciate the value of different cultures
Cultural Relativism
The set of learned behaviors, beliefs, attitudes, values, and ideals that are characteristic of a society or population
Culture
The practice of treating people differently on a basis other than merit
Discrimination
The total, generally organized way of life, including values, norms, institutions, and symbols that reflect the largest culture
Dominant Culture
Large groups of people who are classified according to racial, national, tribal, religious, linguistic, or cultural origin or background
Ethnicity
An ethical principle that entails keeping one’s promises or commitments
Fidelities
Gaps in the quality of health and health care across racial, ethnic, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic groups

Health Disparities
A statement of national health objectives designed to identify the most significant preventable threats to health and to establish national goals to release these threats
Healthy People 2020
The degree to which people identify with their country of origin
Heritage Consistency
Provided federal assistance to state governments for the construction and modernizationof hospitals and other health care facilities

Hill-Burton Act
The ethical principle stating that people should be treated equally and fairly
Justice
A group that is smaller in number than other groups; a part of a population that differs in characteristics , often resulting in differential treatment
Minority
Refers to personal character and what the individual believes is wrong or right conduct
Morality
The phrase used to reflect the need to provide health services with respect for people’s health beliefs and practices when they are different from our own
Multicultural Health
The principle that one should do no harm
Nonmaleficence
The concept of dividing people into populations or groups on the basis of visible traits and beliefs about common ancestry
Race
The belief that some races are superior to others by nature
Racism
A sense of admiration, honor, value that invokes a belief that a person or object should be treated seriously and with courtesy
Respect
The standards or codes of behavior expected by the group to which the individual belongs
Ethics
An ethical principle that involves being truthful
