Narrow definition:
- Common ancestry
- Common traditions
- Common language, behavior, habits, dress, food..
Culture
Shared thoughts, behaviors, symbols, and way of life among a large group of people.
Is culture inclusive or exclusive?
Inclusive- Culture encompasses gender, sexual orientation, disability, ect.
Exclusive- Culture only encompasses race
Components of culture
- Race and ethnicity
- Religion
- Age
- National origin
- Occupation
- Gender
Etic
- Theory is universal
- “Good therapy is good therapy”
- Disorders are treated the same way
Emic
- Theory is contextually specific
- Different in culture affect theory
- Interventions are culture specific
Tripartite model of personal identity
Individual Level - All individuals are unique in some respect (influenced by genetics, not shared experienced)
Group Level - All individuals in some respect, are like some other individuals (shared experiences across gender, SES, race, age, ability, sexual orientation)
Universal Level - All individuals are in some ways, like all other individuals (ability for language, biological similarities)
