Multicellular protists Flashcards
1
Q
Brown algae
A
- kelp, seaweed,
- exclusively marine
- placed in the same group that includes diatoms, dinoflagellates (not red and green algae)
- contain ALGIN which is used as thickening agent in foods
- alternation of generations
- kelp forests dominated by
2
Q
Red algae
A
- rhodophytes
- red color due to photosynthetic accessory pigment= phycoerythrin
- mostly marine
- can occur at depths where other algae cannot grow
- –they can do this because of the pigment
- alternation of generations
- many are fliamentous
- some are coralline (calcified)
- used in sushi
3
Q
Green algae
A
- alternation of generations
- chloroplasts similar to those found in land plants
- marine, freshwater, terrestrial
- 2 major groups:
- —chlorphytes
- —-charophytes= closest relative of land plants
4
Q
Slime molds
A
- type of unikot= diverse group of protists closely related to fungi and animals
- morphologically similar to fungi
- some are “Super Cells” = single cytoplasm that contains many nuclei
- mostly single celled
- others can form colonial structures when times are tough
