Multicellular Organisms Flashcards
What is mitosis
Mitosis is cell division
What does mitosis provide
Mitosis provides new cells for growth and repair of damaged cells
What are unspecialized cells
Stem cells in animals are unspecialized cells
What can stem cells do?
Stem cells can divide by mitosis to produce identical stem cells
What is involved for growth and repair?
Stem cells
What works together to form organs?
Different tissues
What does the cerebrum do?
Site of conscious thought, personality, reasoning and higher centres
What does the cerebellum do?
Controls balance and co-ordination of movement
What does the medulla do?
Controls breathing and heart rate
What do electrical impulses do?
Carry messages along neurons from the senses to the CNS, then to the effector
What controls reflex actions
The reflex arc
What are the three neurons involved in the reflex arc?
Sensory neuron, inter neuron and motor neuron
What is the function of the reflex arc?
To protect the body from danger
What releases hormones into the blood stream?
Endocrine glands
What are hormones?
Chemical messengers
Hormones are chemical messengers which are specific to their?
Target tissue
What does the pancreas do?
Monitors the blood glucose level
When is insulin released?
When blood sugar levels are too high
Where is glycogen stored?
In the liver
When is glucagon released?
When blood sugar level is too low
What is diploid?
When a cell has 2 matching sets of chromosomes
What is haploid?
When a cell has 1 set of chromosomes
What part of a female produces eggs?
The ovary
What is the male plant organ?
Anther
What is the female plant organ?
Ovary
What is a zygote?
A fertilised egg
What is genotype?
The genes an organism has
What is phenotype?
The physical appearance of an organism
What is homozygous?
Both alleles are the same(identical)
What is heterozygous?
Alleles are different
What is transportation?
Loss of water through leaves
What is deoxygenated blood?
It flows from right side of the heart to the lungs to absorb oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide
What is oxygenated blood?
Flows from the lungs to the left side of the heart
