Multi-Store Model - S + W Flashcards
S - Scoville and Milner (1957)
Case study of HM, who had medial temporal lobe damage. He had impaired LTM but normal digit span (STM capacity). Supports theory as it demonstrates that long and short-term memories are stored in distinctly separate stores
S - Evidence regarding brain injuries
Evidence shows that brain injuries can affect either STM or LTM, suggesting that different parts of the brain underlie the STM and LTM stores. Supports multi-store model as it suggests the existence of two distinct, separate stores
W - The Working Memory model (Baddeley and Hitch)
The Working Memory model (Baddeley and Hitch) showed that STM is more than just one unitary store and is comprised of different components (e.g. central executive, visuo-spatial sketchpad, etc.). Refutes the model, as the model suggests that STM is a single unitary store as opposed to being comprised of many components - reductionist
W - Types of long-term memory
Different types of long-term memory have now been identified; episodic (memories of events), procedural (how to do things) and semantic (general knowledge). Refutes the model, which suggests that the LTM is a singular store as opposed to being made up of different components - reductionist
