Strength evaluation

A

P- supporting research that the STM and LTM are different stores
E- a psychologist showed that we muddle up words that sound similar, when we are using out STM (suggesting that STM is acoustic) and we muddle up words that mean similar things when we use our LTM (suggesting that LTM is semantic).
E- supports the MSM model that the STM and LTM are different stores.

P- free recall experiments
E-particpants were given a number of words from a list to remember, and then asked to recall in any order. The results fell into the pattern known as the free recall serial position curve, and this was predicted by the MSM model that
E- predictive validity for memory studies

Q

Limitaion evaluation

A

P- the idea of prolonged rehearsal has been criticised
E- a psychologist conducted a study where where he asked particpants to read a list of words over and over, and gave them another list o read once. However when he asked them to recall them, he found that the words that were rehearsed, weren’t recalled more frequent/easier in comparison to the other words.
E- the role of rehearsal is over emphasised

P- evidence suggesting that there is more then 1 STM store.
E- a patient with amnesia, and when he heard digits, he had poorer recall in comparison to if he read them, where recall was much better.
E- the MSM is wrong to just assume there is just one STM store so it can be deemed as too simple.
