Multi-Store Model of Memory Flashcards
What stages does a memory have to go through to go into storage?
- The sensory register.
- Short-term memory.
- Long-term memory.
Who proposed the three memory stages?
Atkinson and Shiffrin.
What is the Atkinson-Shiffrin model of human memory based on?
The belief that we process memories in the same way a computer processes information.
What are the three memory variables?
- Coding.
- Capacity.
- Duration.
What is coding?
The process of changing information from the environment to store it in memory.
What is capacity?
The amount of information that can be stored.
What is duration?
The time period that information is held in the memory stores.
What is the sensory register?
Where stimuli from the environment are processed first.
What is stored in the sensory register?
- Sights.
- Sounds.
- Smells.
- Textures.
What is the duration of the sensory register?
Up to a couple seonds.
Why is the duration of the sensory register very brief?
Humans are constantly bombarded with sensory information and cannot absorb all of it.
What is the coding of the sensory register?
It’s specific to each sense.
