Multi Store Model of Memory Flashcards
What does MSM state about memory?
Linear process where information is passed from one store to another, each of these has its own features and functions
How long is information held in the sensory register?
Held here for no longer
than a second or 2
How is information encoded in the sensory register?
Via all 5 senses
How many items can sensory register hold?
Up to 10 seconds
How many items can the STM hold?
5-9 items
How long can STM hold information for?
30 seconds
How is information encoded in the STM?
acoustically
How much can be stored in the LTM?
Unlimited for a lifetime
How is information encoded in the LTM?
Semantically
How does Baddeley support MSM?
Demonstrates the encoding of STM and LTM are
correct (participants recalled less words when either acoustically similar or
semantically similar words were used) therefore the theory is credible/valid in its
description of human memory
Why is using Baddeley as supporting research a weakness for MSM?
Took place in lab experiments (like Baddeley) so the findings about
storage etc of the STM and LTM might not really apply to real world human memory
How does Clive Wearing support MSM?
STM functioned in the absence of damaged LTM so shows there are two separate stores, meaning the theory is credible in explaining human memory
How does KC conflict MSM?
He couldn’t recall episodic memories but could recall semantic information so MSM is too reductionist to explain human behaviour as LTM is more complicated
How is MSM useful?
Explains how revision works (the need for rehearsal to transfer information to LTM) so its a credible explanation of memory as it explains real life behaviour
Why is MSM reductionist?
Explanation of STM is too simple, WMM is a better explanation (different capacities for auditory and visual info)
