Q

Sensory Store

A
  • information obtained through senses
  • lasts up to 2 seconds
  • if not paid attention too it can’t be passed on to our short term memory and will be lost through trace decay

Q

Short term memory

A
  • sensory information was paid attention too
  • DURATION: lasts up to 30 seconds
  • CAPACITY: 5-8 items
  • auditory (coding)
  • if not rehearsed will not pass into long term ad will be lost through trace decay

Q

Evidence- Peterson and Peterson (1959)

A

Aim- to investigate the duration of short term memory and provide empirical evidence for the multi store model
Procedure:
-lab experiment
-24 ppt (psych students)
-had to recall trigrams for 18 seconds
-interference tasks to prevent rehearsal
-Correct recall was unlikely after 15-18 seconds (10% remembered after 18 seconds)
-suggesting decay in short term memory occurs after a period of 15 seconds

Q

Strengths

A

Supporting evidence, increases reliability and scientific credability.
Studies are replicable
Supported by evidence from brain damage cases as they show a distinction between LTM and STM e.g. HM
