Multi store model Flashcards
Who created the Multi Store Model?
Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968)
What assumptions did they make about memory?
1) LTM and STM are separate stores one can be damaged and the other will function
2) Linear process info must be processed through each stage before getting to the LTM
What are the three components of memory?
1) Sensory register
2) STM
3) LTM
What is the encoding capacity and duration of the sensory register?
encoding- modality specific
capacity- very large only paid attention goes to STM
duration- very short approximately 250 milliseconds
What is the encoding capacity and duration of the STM?
encoding- mainly acoustic
capacity- 7+- pieces of information
duration- 18 seconds approximately
What is the encoding capacity and duration of the LTM?
encoding- semantic encoding
capacity- thought to be unlimited
duration- thought to last up to a lifetime
Evaluations
(supporting research)
(case studies)
(too simplistic)
P-controlled lab studies show separate stores LTM and STM basis of MSM
E-studies using brain scans demonstrate the difference between STM and LTM
E-prefrontal cortex active STM not LTM but hippocampus engaged when LTM is used
L-objective evidence provides support for the MSM
STRENGTH
KF-against MSM had a damaged STM but could get new info into his LTM proving it’s not a linear process as there are different routes
HM-supports assumption there are different stores after his hippocampus removed had a STM but was unable to transfer this into his LTM proving they’re separate stores
Clive Wearing- supports different stores he has no STM some LTM new skills transfer straight here but can’t remember instances that just happened refutes linear process
STRENGTHS+LIMITATIONS of case studies
P- the MSM is reductionist when explaining complex memory processes
E- WMM evidence the STM is divided into different stores difference in kind of memory stored there
E- same LTM rehearsal can explain semantic memories but not episodic
L- MSM may be too simplistic
