Multi-store Model Flashcards
What are the three main parts of the MSM (multi store model)
Sensory memory, short term memory, long term memory
How long does information last in the sensory memory.
Around half a second
How does something go from sensory memory to the short term memory.
By paying attention to it
How much information can the short term memory store.
7 + or - 2 pieces of information
How long does information last in in the short term memory?
Around 15 seconds
How can information last longer in the STM or be transferred to long term memory
Information can be rehearsed which makes it last and and eventually be transferred to long term memory
What does LTM stand for?
Long term memory
What is the duration and capacity of LTM
Potentially infinite
What happens to information in LTM when it’s needed
It’s sent to STM for its use
What happens to information in STM when it’s not rehearsed
It gets forgor 💀
What is the theory on what happens to unrehearsed information in LTM
The information itself doesn’t get forgotten but rather the way of recalling it does.
How does the sensory memory encode information
It encodes Visually
How does the STM encode information
It encodes information phonetically (how it sounds)
How does the LTM encode information.
It encodes semantically
(What it means)
Who made the MSM theory
Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968)
