Multi-store model Flashcards
what is the multi store model
Representation of how memory works in terms of three stores. It also describes how info is transferred from one store to another and how it is remembered and how it is forgotten.
Who proposed the MSM
Atkinson and Shiffrin and it consist of the sensory register, STM and LTM
Sensory register
Stimulus from the environment will pass into the sensory registers.
Two main stores of sensory register
Iconic memory= Visual info coded visually
Echoic memory= auditory info is coded acoustically.
Duration and the capacity Of sensory register
Duration=Less than half a second
Capacity= very high
However very little of what goes into the sensory register passes further on. But if you pay attention information is more likely ti be passed onto STM
Short term memory
Is known for its limited capacity. Has a capacity of 7 plus or minus 2.
Coded acoustically
Last for 18-30 seconds unless it is rehearsed.
Maintenance rehearsal
Occurs when we repeat things over and over again. As a result we keep the info in our STM and if we rehearse it long enough then it passes onto the LTM
Long term Memory
memory store for information that has been rehearsed for a long time. The capacity of LTM is unlimited.
It is coded semantically
Duration is lifetime
Retrieval
to pass memory back from LTM to STM it has to be retrieved.
