Multi store model Flashcards
who created the MSM?
Richard Atkinson and Richard Shriffin in 1968
what is the sensory register?
where information is processed through the senses: ears, nose, eyes etc
The capacity is very large
constantly receiving information but most of this receives no attention and remains in the sensory register for a brief period - milisecond
what is attention?
When a person’s attention is focused on their sensory receptors then data is processed in STM
attention is crucial for remembering things
what is Short term memory?
Information that is used for immediate events
information can disappear quickly if it is not rehearsed
Sometimes information can be displaced. For example, new information enters short term memory so it can displace the original information
it does this because the capacity of STM is small
when you repeat something again and again this is called maintenance rehearsal
what is maintenance rehearsal?
Repetition of information can lead that same information to be stored in STM however, such repetition can lead to this information to be stored in the LTM
Atkinson and Shriffin proposed the link between short term memory and rehearsal and the strength of LTM
the more things are repeated the better the memory
what is LTM?
it has an unlimited capacity and duration
what is retrieval?
To process information from LTM, information must pass back through STM first
