Multi-Store Model Flashcards
Who proposed the 3 Unitary Stores?
Atkinson and Shifrin
What 3 variables affect each store?
Capacity, Duration, Coding
What is coding?
The format in which data is stored
What is duration?
How long the info is stored for
What is capacity?
How much info can be stored
Define the sensory register store.
All sensory information is received via sense organs, this is not conscious and lasts a very short amount of time.
Name and define the 5 sensory stores. (H.E.I.G.O)
haptic (tactile), echoic (sound), iconic (visual), gustatory (taste), olfactory (smell)
Define the short term memory store.
Information we pay attention to is transferred to the STM for 18-30 seconds. It is maintained through repetition or chunking.
Define the long term memory store.
Verbally rehearsed info in STM is passed to the LTM, info here usually has some meaning/relative importance to us.
Describe the multi store model in terms of relationships and processes.
Sensory memory + attention = STM. Rehearsal maintains. Rehearsal + STM = LTM transfer. Retrieval + LTM = Strong LTM.
Describe the capacity of the 3 unitary stores.
Sensory memory: all sensory experience
STM: 7(+-2)(Increased by chunking)
LTM: Unlimited
Describe the duration of the 3 unitary stores.
Sensory memory: 1/4 second if visual, 4 seconds if auditory
STM: 18-30 seconds
LTM: Unlimited
Describe the coding of the 3 unitary stores.
Sensory memory: the sense in which it is received
STM: Mainly phonological (auditory)
LTM: Mainly semantic (has meaning)
Name the researchers that support the MSM.
Sperlings, Jacobs, Baddeley, Peterson and Peterson,
What did Sperling’s study involve?
4x3 list of letters, involving the iconic store and sensory memory.
