Q

How do we get info into the Sensory Memory?

A

The SM takes info from the sense organs (that have been been picked up by environmental stimuli)

Q

How do we get info into from Short Term Memory to Long Term Memory?

A

Rehearsing it

  • Maintenance rehearsal keeps it in our STM
  • Elaborative rehearsal can get it in our LTM

Q

Supporting evidence

A

Glanzer & Cunitz (1966) found words at the beginning and words at the end of the list were remembered best by participants. Shows how there are two separate stores, primacy effect is that the first words are rehearsed and therefore transferred to STM whereas the last are still in the STM (regency effect) as they’ve just been seen.

MRI scans show which parts of the brain are being used when certain tasks are being carried out; when remembering new info the hippocampus is active, this task requires your LTM. When making a decision the prefrontal lobes are active- this uses your STM
