Third parties like pc come close to winning and compete effectively

2017:cons got 42% of vote and labour got 40% of votes making the total vote share 80%

Smaller parties like ld gain significant amount of seats and even formed gov in coalition with cons becauuse they got the 2nd highest seats, apart from labour
2010 coalition w cons because cons got 309 seats which is not enough to form gov as u need 326

Labour and cons are always likely to win bcs they have most experience in gov and are trusted
After the 2010 election ld lost majority of seats: in manifesto they claimed they would decrease tuition fees from 3k but after coalition it increased to 9k

Rise in regional parties like snp: people from that region are likely to vote due to ideologies
2015 election where snp won 56/59 seats in Scotland
Success reflects strength of smaller parties

Labour faced difficulties during 1970s-> created established beliefs
In 4 elections between 1979 and 1992 cons won all elections which highlights their strength and ability to compete effectively
