Mulit-store model Flashcards
Describe the multi-store model
Consists of three stores: A sensory register, short-term memory and long-term memory.
Differences between STM and LTM
The ability to recollect a tiny amount of recent knowledge is known as STM. Whereas the ability to retrieve memories from a longer period of time is LTM.
The capacity of STM is limited whereas the capacity of LTM is unlimited.
Explain how research has been conducted into the capacity of STM.
Four numbers were presented to each participant, and they were asked to recall them aloud in the right sequence. The individual was given more and more digits until they could no longer accurately recall the order.
Explain how research has been conducted into the duration of STM.
They were given a trigram and 3 digit number to recall. They had to count backwards from the 3 digit number until told to stop.
Explain how research has been conducted into coding in STM and LTM.
Giving participants word lists that are similar in the way they sound (acoustic) or meaning (semantic).
Explain how research has been conducted into the duration of LTM.
Bahrick (1975) used 392 American university graduates to study how long long-term memory lasts. The graduates were shown pictures taken from their high school year books. Participants were given a list of names for each picture and asked to choose the name that best fit the picture.
