the Imamate
A
- when Muhammed died Muslims split into two groups: Sunni and Shi’a
- Shi’a believe Muhammed named his cousin Ali as his successor, so Ali became the first Imam
- believe prophet appointed Ali by divine instruction and leadership should follow family line

what is the other branch of Shi’a and their beliefs?

- twelver branch
- believed there have been 12 Imams in total and the last has been kept alive and hidden on earth and will return with Jesus to bring justice and equality
- believe Imams not only rule but are able to maintain and interpret the Qu’ran without fault

why is the Imamate important?
A
- important as people need divine guidance to know how to live correctly

Muhammed’s life
A
- last and greatest prophet
- brought the final revelation of Islam from God
- born around 570CE in Mecca, orphaned and brought up by an uncle
- around 610CE he says angel Jibril appeared to him with a message from God
- for more than 20 years he continued to receive these messages and they were combined to form the Qu’ran

Muhammed’s preachings
A
- after his revelation he proclaimed God is the one
- started preaching 3 years after his first revelation
- challenged the people of Mecca to give up cheating, gambling, drinking and idol worship
- Muhammed fled persecution with his followers to Madinah in 622CE
- start of Hajj and Ummah
- after the night journey, Muhammed gathered a tripe of 10,000 converts and conquered the city in the name of Allah
