Mudflats and saltmarshes Flashcards
1
Q
Where do mudflats develop?
A
- sheltered shorelines that aren’t exposed to powerful waves
2
Q
Where are mudflats often found?
A
- in estuaries (where rivers meet the sea)
- landward side of a spit
3
Q
What are mudflats composed of?
A
silt and clay
4
Q
What are mudflats?
A
- low lying areas that are submerged at high tide
5
Q
What is flocculation and how does it affect mudflats?
A
- when gently flowing saltwater and river water meet (both carrying fine sediment)
- Flocculation = causes fine particles to settle out of suspension
- individual clay particles aggregate together to form larger, heavier particles that can sink to the bed
6
Q
At low tide, what is left exposed?
A
the inter-tidal area of mud
7
Q
Are mudflats permanent features?
A
- no
- very susceptible to changes in sea level, wave action or changes in discharge levels
