Mucles of the spine and Thorax Flashcards
Muscle names, origin, insertions and actions.
What is the origin, insertion and action of the muscle Spinalis ?
Origin: common tendon (thoracolumbar aponeurosis)
Insertion: spinous process of all vertebrae
Action: bi-laterally: extend vertebral column
uni-laterally: laterally flex vertebral column
What is the meaning of uni-lateral and bi-lateral in terms of muscle actions?
uni-lateral: only the muscle on one side of the spine contract. Resulting action is lateral flexion to one side.
bi-lateral: muscles on both sides of spine contract. results in extension of the vertebral column.
What is the origin, insertion and action of the muscle Longissimus?
Origin: common tendon (thoracolumbar aponeurosis)
Insertion: transverse processes of all thoracic and cervical, ribs, and mastoid process of temporal bone.
Action: bi-laterally: extend vertebral column
uni-laterally: laterally flex vertebral column
What is the origin, insertion and action of the muscle Illiocostalis?
Origin: common tendon (thoracolumbar aponeurosis)
Insertion: ribs 1-12
Action: Bi-laterally: extend vertebral column
uni-laterally: laterally flex vertebral column
The muscles spinalis, longissimus and illiocostalis make up what muscle group?
Erector Spinae Group (ESG)
What is the origin, insertion and action of the muscle Rotatories?
Origin: transverse processes of all vertebrae
Insertion: spinous processes of all vertebrae
Action: extends back, rotates spine to opposite side
What is the origin, insertion and action of the muscle Semispinalis Capitus?
Origin: transverse process of thoracic vertebrae and lower cervicals.
Insertion: spinous processes of upper thoracic, cervicals and nuchal line
Action: extends the spine and head.
What is the origin, insertion and action of the muscle Multifidi?
Origin: sacrum and transverse processes of all vertebrae
Insertion: spinous processes of all vertebrae
Action: extends back, rotate spine to opposite side
The muscles Multifidi, Rotatores and Semispinalis capitus make up which muscle group?
Transverse spinali group
What is the origin, insertion and action of the muscle Splenius Capitis?
Origin: spinous processes of C7 to T4
Insertion: mastoid process and nuchal line
Action: uni-laterally: rotate head to same side
bi-laterally: extend head and neck
What is the origin, insertion and action of the muscle Splenius Cervicis?
Origin: spinous processes of T3-T6
Insertion: transverse processes of C1- C3
Action: uni-lateral: rotate head to the same side
bi-lateral: extend the head and neck
What is the general origin, insertion and action of the Suboccipital muscles? (the suboccipitals will not be looked into with detail and will instead be looked at in a group)
Location: Spinous process C2, transverse process C1 and inferior nuchal lines.
Action: all rock and tilt the head back into extension.
What is the origin, insertion and action of the muscle Quadratus Lumborum (QL)
Origin: prosterior illiac crest
Insertion: last rib, transverse processes of L1-L4
Action: uni-laterally: elevates hip, laterally flexes spine
bi-laterally: assists to extend vertebral column, fixes last rib during respiration.
The muscles Splenius Capitis, Splenius Cervicis, Suboccipitals, and Quadratus Lumborum make up which muscle group?
Splenii group
What is the origin, insertion and action of the muscle Rectus Abdominis
