MTSS Flashcards
MTSS
data driven and focused on the whole child (behavior, home life, social skills, etc.)
universal screener
given three times a year - early to plan for intervention, Jan to see if intervention is needed, and end of the year as a possible consideration for September
What are five essential components of MTSS?
1) high quality instruction
2) increasing levels of instructional intervention
3) progress monitoring
4) data-based decision making
5) fidelity measures
progress monitoring
diagnostic interviews determine what area specific deficit lies, and sees how intervention works - the base is the same you are measuring against
high quality instruction
research based - parts or components of the program or method are based on practiced demonstrated effective through research (eg. manipulatives, student engagement)
evidence based - the entire program has been researched + proven effective
fidelity measures
describes that there is a standard to back what the teacher is doing (more so than just curriculum… e.g. if students do not need the five days the curriculum set aside, move on to something else)
What skills are predictors of generalized success?
1) number identification 2) next number fluency 3) quantity discussion (discrimination?) 4) simple computation
targeted interventions and progress monitoring are designed with what two things in mind?
1) benchmark data
2) diagnostic interview
flexible groupings
students move from group to group if necessary, e.g. a “high” kid may be placed in an intense intervention group if they missed a week of school
what is a research based practice to help intervention students?
1) set progress goals, assess on a regular basis towards these goals, and help students graph goal
Tier 1
what every student gets - 80% of students need only tier 1
Tier 2
15% will fall here - give students manipulatives, explain content in a different way, and they will usually get back on track
Tier 3
special education support - additional curriculum or use number cards to practice fluency - these students should still partake in tier 1
