MST1201 Flashcards
What is bioturbation?
The term used by biologists to describe the disturbing of sediments by the activity of invertebrate animals as they burrow and move through the sediment habitat
What are the features of salt marshes?
Saltmarshes are important systems for carbon storage or sequestration
Saltmarshes play an important role in attenuating wave action and reducing flooding
Saltmarsh plants are very stress tolerant
What is primary succession?
Primary succession occurs on bare, uncolonised ground that never has any vegetation growing on it.
How are saltmarshes developed?
the movement and deposition of sediment
What are sessile organisms?
Organisms that are adhered permanently onto the rock
What are infauna organisms?
Organisms that live buried within substratum
What are epibenthic organisms?
Organisms that are emergent and are anchored in or upon the substratum
