MSM Flashcards
What is the Multi-store model?
explanation of memory based on three separate memory stores, and how info is transferred between these stores.
what does the MSM comprise?
- sensory register
- STM
- LTM
Draw a diagram of MSM
Environmental stimuli- SR- Attention-STM-MR-LTM-Retrieval-STM
MSM process at sensory register…
info in the SR is held at 5 senses. Capacity large duration 250 milliseconds. most of info lost as receives no attention.
MSM process at STM…
If attention is focused on one of the sensory stores, passed to STM. Info held in STM for immediate tasks. limited duration 18 secs and decays rapidly unless rehearsed. Limited capacity, new info entering STM displaces current info.
MSM process at LTM…
Rehearsal can lead to info transferred to LTM. Unlimited in duration and capacity. Info stored in LTM can be returned to STM by process of retrieval, where it becomes available for use.

Evaluation of MSM
Supporting evidence.
- controlled lab experiments support existance of seperate S-T + L-T stores. Brain scanning techniques demonstarted a difference between ST+LT. Squire (1992) FOUND HIPPOCAMPUS IS ACTIVE ON LTM tasks x STM. Beardlsy (1997) found prefrontal cortex in STM X LTM.
HM
Evaluation of MSM
Support from case studies.
studies of brain damaged individuals show diff parts of brain areas involved STM+LTM. HM’S brain damage removal of both hippocampi, could not form new LTMs, could remember things before the surgery.
this supports MSM as HM unable to transfer info from his STM to LTM, but able to retrieve memories from before surgery.
WMM, diff LTM
Evaluation of MSM
MSM overly simplistic
Proposes STM+ LTM are single stores no evidence of support for this. WMM (Baddeley and hitch) suggests STM dividied into a no of qualitively diff stores. Research also found diff types of LTM , episodic, procedural and semantic. Suggests MSM simplisitc model of memory doesn’t take into account diff types of STM +LTM.
What is maintenance rehearsal? And who proposed it?
Atkinson and Shiffrin proposed a direct relationship between rehearsal in short term memory and strength of ltm- more info rehearsed the better it is remembered.
