MSK - The Hip Joint Flashcards
What type of Joint is the Hip?
Synovial
Ball and Socket
What is the articulating surface of the Hip?
Acetabulum
Head of Femur
Which is the only intracapsular ligament?
Ligament of the head of Femur
Acetabular fossa to the fovea of the femur
It encloses a small branch of the Obturator Artery
Name the 3 Extracapsular Ligaments
And what they prevent
Iliofemoral (hyperextension of hip)
Pubofemoral (excessive abduction and extension)
Ischiofemoral (excessive extension of femur at hip)
What is the Vascular Supply?
Medial and Lateral Circumflex Arteries
What is its innervation?
Femoral Nerve
Obturator Nerve
Superior Gluteal Nerve
Nerve to Quadratus Femoris
What is special about the ligaments orientation?
They are arranged in a spiral which means that it is more stable as it can become tighter when extending the hip.
It also means less energy is required when standing upright
Flexor Muscles
Iliosoas
Rectus femoris
Sartorius
Extensor Muscles
Gluteus maximus
Semimembranous
Semitendinosus
Biceps femoris
Abduction
Gluteus medius
Gluteus minimus
Deep gluteal muscles
Adduction
Adductors longus, brevis and magnus
Pectineus
Gracillis
Lateral Rotation
Biceps femoris
Gluteus maximus
Deep gluteals
Medial rotation
Gluteus medius and minimus
semitendinosus
semimembranosus
What can happen from a neck of femur fractur
Lateral rotation
Limb appears shorter
Circumflex femoral artery can by damaged
Can cause avascular necrosis
Signs of a hip dislocation
Inability to abduct at the hip joint
Affected limb is shorter
Positive Trendelenburg sign
