Erector Spinae Group
Sub Occipitals
Sternocleidomastoid
Rectus Abdominis
Muscles in your abdominal area (“abs”); flex vertebrae, ask patient to crunch and feel to make sure they are bilaterally activated
External Oblique
Muscles on the side of your abdomen that contract to hold your organs in place; ask client to bring elbow to opposite knee for activation

Anterior: manubrium of sternum, Posterior: superior angle of scapula
T4
Anterior: sternal angle
T6
Anterior: xiphoid process of sternum
T7
Posterior: inferior angle of scapula
T12
Anterior: Umbilicus (belly button), Posterior: 12th rib
L4
Posterior; Top of iliac crest (top of hip bone)
Masseter
Muscle that runs from your cheek bone to your jaw and helps with chewing; elevate the mandible - clench jaw (or chew)
Temporalis
Muscles that help you with chewing; Ask patient to open and close their mouth. Feel on the sides of temples (temporalis) to palpate (“I’m going to touch right here (temples) and I want you to pretend like you’re chewing”)
Supra/Infra Hyoids
Ask client to swallow and feel above hyoid bone for suprahyoids and below hyoid bone for infrahyoids
Platysma
Muscles that help tighten the skin on your neck; ask client to express rage/terror or pretend like they are shaving their neck in the mirror
Orbicularis Oris
Muscles around your mouth that help you pucker your lips; ask client to pucker their lips/pretend like they’re blowing a kiss
Buccinator
Muscles that help you suck in your cheeks and keep food in your mouth; ask client to blow their cheeks up and act like you’re blowing up a balloon
Procerus
Muscles that allow you to furrow your eyebrows and show expression; ask client to squint and palpate between eyebrows
Occipitofrontalis
Muscles that allow you to show expression and raise your eyebrows; ask client to raise eyebrows or make a surprised face. Feel on forehead and base of skull
Eye Movements
Tell patient “we’ll be doing a quick vision screening today to make sure your eye muscles are working correctly, if you could please keep your head stable and follow my finger with your eyes”, then perform a visual scanning test with plus sign and x
Scapular Landmarks
Spine, Lateral Border, Medial Border; “I’m going to feel for a landmark in your shoulder to make sure it’s in the right position”
Clavicular Landmarks
Sternal end, Acromial end; “I’m going to feel for a landmark on your clavicle to make sure it’s in the correct position”
Trapezius
Muscles that help you shrug/pull your shoulders; ask client to shrug shoulder to palpate upper traps, ask client to round shoulders and pull them back and palpate along the spines of the scapulae for middle traps
Rhomboids
muscle running between shoulder blades and spine; put your fingers between spine and shoulder blade. Ask client to pinch your fingers
Infra/Supraspinatus
ask client to abduct and adduct arm with arm bent. Feel for both above and below the spine of the scapula
Deltoid
Arm Muscle; find acromion and feel beneath it while client is pushing against your hand (abducting) feel posterior, anterior, and middle while cupping the deltoid
Pectoralis Major
Chest muscles; press fisted hand on hip and lift elbow the abduct. To lengthen abduct arm upwards over head. To shorten adduct arm towards/across midline of body. For females, have partner shift breast towards midline to access.
