What 4 bones make up the knee joint?
femur (thigh bone), tibia (big leg bone), fibula (skinny leg bone), and patella (knee bone)
What bone has a medial and lateral condyl?
The femur
What 2 bones does the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) connect?
Lateral femoral condyl to anterior tibia.
What is the purpose of the ACL?
To resist anterior movement of the tibia.
What 2 bone structures does the PCL (posterior cruciate ligament) connect?
What is the purpose of the PCL (posterior cruciate ligament)?
To resist posterior movement of the tibia
Point out the major bones and ligaments on these MRIs of the knee.
What do valgus and varus knees mean?
Where does the MCL (medial collateral ligament) run to and from (what 2 bones does it connect)? What’s its job?
MCL runs from the medial epicondyle of the femur to the medial condyle of the tibia. It resists valgus (knock knee) stress.
Where does the LCL (lateral collateral ligament) run to and from (what 2 bones does it connect)? What’s its job?
LCL runs from the lateral condyle of the femur to the head of the fibula. It resists varus (bow leg) stress.
What’s the “unhappy triad”?
Triad of injury that is common in contact sports. Happens when your feet are planted and you get whacked from the side, knee pushed toward midline (lateral force applied to knee when foot planted).
- ACL tear
- MCL tear
- Medial meniscal tear
Where does the brachial artery run and what 2 arteries does it branch into?
The brachial artery runs down the humerus bone (upper arm bone) and branches into radial and ulnar arteries past the elbow joint.
