Q
Characteristics of gout
A
Mono sodium Urate crystal deposition caused by metabolism disorder->hyperuricemia. Can be 2* to disease of high metabolic turnover eg haemolytic anemia
Crystal analysis from joint aspiration :negatively birefringent needle shaped intracellular crystals
Mgmt:Colchicine for acute,allopurinol and probenecid
2
Q
Characteristics of pseudo gout
A
Inflammatory arthritis caused by intraarticular calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition. Often acute mono articular tenderness
Crystal analysis via joint aspiration:positively birefringent rhomboid crystals
Mgmt:NSAIDs,steroids for acute, colchicine for chronic or prophylactic
