MSK Flashcards
Name the 6 functions of the skeleton.
Raise off ground; determine body shape; hold body mass; movement; protection; store minerals.
Describe the 2 divisions of the skeleton.
Appendicular: long peripheral bones.
Axial: Skull, ribs & vertebrae.
Describe the 5 bone shapes.
Long: tubular, hollow, expanded ends. Short/cuboidal Flat: curved protective plates Irregular: 'other', various shapes Sesamoid: type of irregular, round oval nodules in a tendon eg kneecaps.
Describe the 2 types of bone macrostructure.
Cortical: Compact and dense with cells & vessels
Trabecular/cancellous: spongy with marrow, cells & vessels.
Describe the 2 types of bone microstructure.
Woven: made fast, disorganised & no structure.
Lamellar: made slowly to replace woven, organised layered structure.
Describe the composition of bone.
50-70% mineral calcium phosphate to provide stiffness.
20-40% organic collagen to provide elasticity.
5-10% water.
